Centered zoom and road reports

Pinch, scroll, or use the +/− map buttons to choose your zoom while your vehicle stays centered. GPS updates preserve your chosen zoom. A small drag returns to the vehicle; a deliberate drag of roughly a quarter of the phone map width pauses follow. Tap the Recenter button at the bottom of the map to resume at your chosen zoom. Finger pressure is not required.

In Map controls, enable or disable Monitor road work and closures. Open Directions → Road work & closures for source status and current reports matched to your route. North Carolina and Minnesota are checked about every five minutes; Kentucky follows its thirty-minute publication interval. Monitoring runs while the page is open and visible. It pauses in the background and refreshes on return. It does not send phone notifications after the app closes.

Construction and closure cards appear near matched road sections ahead. Road names, direction, location, active dates, and feed freshness are checked. Unknown direction and incomplete dates may prevent a match. Voice alerts yield to turns and follow your construction/closure settings. Reports are not complete nationwide incident coverage, and no reports does not establish that a road is clear. Rerouting still depends on the routing provider’s avoidance support.

Where supplied and matched to your current road, the speed card can display a reported work-zone limit from a DOT feed. Conflicting values are withheld. This supplements the existing OSM lookup; it is not nationwide posted-speed coverage. Always follow physical signs, including temporary signs.

Oregon now includes 1,169 additional ODOT still-camera views. Camera courtesy of ODOT; catalog via Oregon Emergency Management’s public TripCheck layer. Images can be delayed or unavailable, and camera direction is not assumed from its filename. General camera browsing includes these views; Next 5 requires verified direction metadata. Images are requested directly when viewed.

Where are you going TO? — tap the TO logo or Home to choose your next step.

Choose Get directions to plan a drive, or Open driving map to follow your location with or without a destination. See the road ahead opens camera search and filters. Trip weather checks a journey; Local weather checks one place. When to leave opens the Departure planner. Your current trip has a View route shortcut.

Daybreak is the default Home appearance. The moon button in the header toggles Dark mode, switching Home and the header to After Dark. The same setting applies to Help and is remembered on this browser when storage is available. Toggle it again for Daybreak. Map tiles, camera images, and forecast symbols retain their source colors.

Explore groups all app sections by task. Open the Camera viewer from a camera window’s Viewer button, Watch saved cameras on Cameras, or Explore. Camera search and filters live on Cameras; playback lives in Viewer; directions and printing live in Directions.

The Around you map shows your area when location is available. Use my location retries location permission. Location updates start automatically after browser permission; Driving map follows you with or without a route. Stop tracking in Map controls. Home, Explore, and Back move between app sections; searches do not send you to the business homepage.

Map controls, place search, and read aloud

Map fills the screen below the compact Home/Explore header. Open Map controls for location, camera previews, layers, driving cards, and background opacity. Lower opacity reveals more of the map. Choose Done to close the drawer. Show whole route turns the route layer on and fits the trip into view.

Use a place name or address with city and state. Typing suggestions use Photon; Search more places checks additional matches from the existing OpenStreetMap and U.S. Census address services. Alternate saint/parish names, street abbreviations, accented characters, and highway formats can find different spellings. Check the address before choosing; the app does not invent missing places or house numbers. If Build route finds an unconfirmed location, choose its result and press Build route again.

In Trip weather, choose Read summary to hear the loaded trip outlook and coverage status, or Stop reading to stop. A turn announcement interrupts the summary. A route change stops old speech. Numbered roads such as US 501 are spoken “US five oh one.”

Posted limits depend on available road metadata; missing data displays a dash. Map data can be incomplete or outdated. A restored trip is fitted to the map; use Show whole route if you have panned away.

Build and review your route

1. Open Directions. Enter a starting place, or use Use current location for start. Enter a destination and choose the correct matching suggestions. Find starting place and Find destination search additional matches when needed.
2. The initial departure is set to the current local time. Open Trip options only if you want to change departure time, camera distance, or add an MPG/fuel-price estimate. Those values are optional; blank fuel fields do not invent a cost estimate.
3. Press Build route. Review the distance and drive time, then use the route-ready panel to Check trip weather, Print / save directions, or Start navigation. Building alone does not start live guidance.
4. Expand Turn-by-turn directions to review individual turns. Expand the separate Route cameras list for cameras ahead in travel order; tap its heading again to collapse it. Its count and distances follow live progress and reroutes. Printing includes the active route’s turns and trip totals, without its map or weather. Browser printing may offer Save as PDF.
5. Voice & traffic details contains speech controls and route-provider details. Road work & closures has reported road issues where connected coverage exists.
6. Clear form resets the entry fields. Exit navigation removes the active trip. Your navigation route stays separate from Weather-only previews and Departure planner’s place fields. Use the Exit navigation control in Directions to end the active trip.

Compare departure times

1. Open Departure planner from Explore, Home’s When to leave, or Trip weather. Use current destination starts checked when a navigation route or last confirmed trip is available. The route summary identifies which trip is selected, and Start and Destination stay collapsed.
2. Uncheck the box to show the alternate route fields. Enter a start or destination, press its Find button, and choose a match, or use the shared five Recent places. Typing alone does not confirm a place. With no current or remembered trip, the fields open automatically. A successfully built trip is remembered in this browser.
3. The first departure date defaults to today. Choose a 1–7 day window and earliest/latest hours, then press Find best departure near the top. Departure times use the displayed device time zone.
4. The planner compares hourly departure times for this route. Suggested times appear above the slider and map. Drag the slider, use Earlier / Later, or select a suggestion. Map symbols show the forecast when you reach each checkpoint.
5. Tap a marker or expand Forecast at each checkpoint for details. Full instructions and the comparison method are below the map.

Searching, building a comparison, and moving its slider never replace navigation’s route, directions, cameras, or departure. A checked current route follows navigation reroutes. Unchecking immediately separates the comparison, even before you type, so it survives navigation reroutes. Checking the box again replaces the comparison with the latest navigation route, or the remembered trip when no route is active.

Exit navigation remains in Directions. Ending navigation preserves the planner comparison. Use this departure changes only the time for the same current navigation route while guidance is stopped; it cannot apply an unchecked independent comparison.

Suggestions are departure times for the selected route, not different road routes. Only departures with complete required forecasts at every sampled checkpoint are ranked. Missing weather is not scored as clear. Forecasts extend roughly seven days from now; long trips can arrive beyond coverage. Stops and live traffic delays are excluded. Changing the comparison invalidates its old forecasts.

Follow your location, with or without a destination

Location updates start automatically when the app opens, after browser permission. Open Driving map to follow your position with or without a destination. Tracking alone does not start turn guidance, change a planned route, or add trip mileage. If you stop location, the app respects that choice for this visit; turn it back on with Use my location in Map controls.

1. Zoom with two fingers, the zoom buttons, or a mouse wheel. Your selected zoom is kept while the map stays centered on your location.
2. A small accidental drag returns to the center. Drag farther to browse away from your position. The Recenter button appears at the bottom of the map; tap it to resume following at your chosen zoom. While browsing away from center, twist with two fingers or use the rotation slider and left/right buttons above Recenter. North up resets the bearing without moving your browsing position. Recenter clears manual rotation and restores location/route follow. Rotation controls are also available when location is stopped.
3. Choose Cameras ahead to find up to five filtered cameras ahead. With a destination, the app uses the planned route. Without one, it enables current-road discovery and matches connected OpenStreetMap road geometry to your GPS position and direction.
4. For a planned trip, press Start navigation in Directions. This enables location follow and voice guidance. Sustained deviations request a new route. When accepted, the highlighted remaining route, turns, camera matches, remaining distance, ETA, and any entered fuel estimate use the replacement route. Distance already driven is retained. Old route weather and road reports are cleared while fresh data loads; a missing forecast or speed limit stays unavailable. An unsuccessful reroute keeps the prior route and off-route notice.

Current-road camera discovery stops at unresolved forks, disconnected road data, or the roughly five-mile look-ahead limit. It does not know which future turn you will take. Unknown road/direction, inaccurate or stale GPS, ramps excluded from the matching network, and provider failures can leave the list empty.

Passing times are estimates based on distance along the connected road and your current speed. Stops and turns change them; no time is displayed while stopped or without reliable direction. Keep the page visible. Hidden-page and locked-screen navigation are not provided reliably by this web app. Follow posted signs and actual road conditions.

Map layers and driving controls

Open Map controls on the Driving map. Toggle route, camera, weather, and trip-information layers. Separately choose turn guidance, current speed, speed limit, ETA, construction, closures, and camera-ahead alerts.

Card background strength changes the card background without fading its text. Reset card layout returns driving cards to their docked arrangement. Clear Filters clears the map filters. Category and media filters let you choose camera types and still images or video.

Construction and closure cards use relevant route-source incidents and matched DOT work-zone reports where connected. Missing incident data does not mean the road is clear. This version has no police-report feed.

Explore cameras on the map

1. Open Explore → Camera map for a full-screen North America overview with Cameras & filters closed. Each new visit to Camera map starts zoomed out; tap the button for the camera list and filters, or zoom into a region. While you stay on the map, typing, closing the keyboard, camera updates, and GPS updates keep your chosen view. The map fills the area below the header even before cameras load or when no cameras match your filters. Tap a numbered cluster to zoom into its cameras, then tap a camera dot or result card to open a camera window without leaving the map.
2. Use Cameras & filters to open or close the results panel. Choose Browse cameras, Next 5 ahead, Route cameras, or Saved cameras from its Camera list menu.
3. Enter a U.S. ZIP code, city and state, or address in the search bar at the top. Press Search, choose the correct matching place, and select a radius from 5 to 100 miles, or Closest · any distance after 100 miles to remove the distance cutoff. The chosen category, media, source and camera-list filters still apply. Results show nearest cameras first, measured in a straight line from that place, not driving distance. Move the map and choose Search this map to browse its visible area. Clear area removes the geographic restriction.
4. Open Filters to choose category, video or still images, source, and region. New users start with Traffic + Video; choices are remembered on this device. Include still images to see roads whose providers only offer snapshots. Wildlife is separate where source categories or camera names identify it; other feeds may be grouped as public webcams, scenic, or other.
5. Choose Next 5 ahead for the planned route, or for your current road when no destination is set. Up to five cameras matching your media/category filters, road, and direction labels appear in encounter order. The list moves forward with live location. Route cameras offers a broader remaining route set. Clicking a camera never changes your route progress.
6. Use Save on a camera window or result card to keep it in Saved cameras. Tap Saved ✓ to remove it. The list holds up to 10 cameras and is remembered on this device; it also supplies the Viewer’s custom camera set. Filters still apply to the saved map view, so broaden them if a saved camera is missing.

Road and direction matches use provider metadata, not verified lane visibility. Unknown directions are excluded from Next 5; fewer than five may qualify. Video availability and delay depend on each source. Passenger use is recommended while moving.

Move and manage camera windows

Keep up to three camera windows on the Map or Cameras tab. Drag the Move handle to reposition one, or focus that handle and use arrow keys. Camera windows on Cameras stay above the search bar and filter panel after you release them. Compact Save, Retry feed, and Viewer buttons sit below the feed. − minimizes it to a small title bar and stops its feed; Open restores it. Expand fills the map area, Restore returns it to a smaller window, and × closes it. Save adds it to your saved list. Moving, zooming, and expanding preserve an already playing feed.

The windows follow you between Map and Cameras during this visit. They stop when you leave those tabs. Saved lists persist after reloading; open windows do not. Still images refresh every 30 seconds while the app is visible; the displayed load time is not a verified camera capture time. Video can be delayed or unavailable. Use Retry feed, tap a video’s Play control if needed, or try another source.

Camera viewer has a large feed and a separate Camera location map. On phones, the map appears below the player with enough height to explore. Center on camera finds the selected camera after panning. This location map does not move your driving map.

Choose Selected camera, Saved cameras, Next 5 cameras ahead, or All route cameras in the Camera list. Choosing a list displays a camera; it does not start automatic playback changes. Previous / Next step through lists with at least two cameras. Press Autoplay to switch every 10 seconds and Pause autoplay to stop. Leaving Viewer pauses autoplay. Open Location map behavior to choose whether that map follows each camera change.

Find cameras opens search and filters. Viewer on a map camera opens that feed here, and Watch saved cameras opens your saved list. Remember this camera contains the default-camera preference; Source details contains attribution. The app does not record footage or recognize vehicles.

Camera window backgrounds, including the minimized title bar, use the same overlay opacity setting in Map controls as your other map cards. Text and camera images remain readable. When a camera is expanded, Map controls and the Cameras search panel are temporarily hidden so they cannot cover its buttons. Use Restore, −, or × at the top of the camera. Dragging Move restores the small window under your finger; keyboard arrow keys on Move also restore it. Press Escape while focused in an expanded camera to restore it.

The Viewer map includes camera dots using your current camera filters. Tap a dot to switch the feed, or a numbered cluster to zoom in. Search camera map opens the full browsing map and filters. Camera maps load markers in small batches so controls remain available; leaving the map or changing filters cancels obsolete work.

Camera-ahead alerts

1. Enable Camera ahead alerts in Cameras or Map controls. The setting starts off.
2. In Cameras, choose a lead time of about 15 seconds, 30 seconds, or 1 minute.
3. With live location and a route active, the card shows the next matching camera and approximate travel time to its mapped location. A notice is given once per camera approach. If voice guidance is on and no turn cue is due, a spoken heads-up can also play.
4. Press View camera to open that feed. Turn the setting off at any time without disabling route guidance.

The notice cannot guarantee your car will be visible: camera position, viewing direction, snapshot refresh, and stream delay vary. A passenger can check a feed while you drive. Inaccurate or stale location suppresses approach notices.

The on-map camera card stays compact and appears within five miles. More distant cameras remain in the Cameras ahead list. Its background follows the overlay opacity setting. Without a destination, enable current-road cameras to use the same alerts along the identified road.

Trip weather and local weather

Trip weather opens with your Current navigation route drawn on its own weather map. It follows navigation reroutes and forecasts at your estimated arrival at remaining checkpoints. Tap a weather symbol for details, zoom in for more symbols, or choose Fit route to see the whole trip.

1. To explore another trip without changing navigation, choose Weather-only route from Route to preview. Your navigation route is copied into the editor when available.
2. Keep those places, or enter a different starting place or destination and press its Find button. Choose the correct match from the list; typed text alone is not a confirmed location.
3. Choose a Weather preview departure or press Leave now, then Preview route weather. This preview starts at the selected starting place, uses its own departure time, and never changes your navigation route, turn directions, location tracking, navigation departure, or route cameras.
4. Review the map and checkpoint cards. Question marks identify missing forecasts, which are excluded from weather conclusions. Read summary reads the route currently selected on this page, with turn announcements taking priority.
5. Copy navigation route copies the latest navigation route into the weather editor. Switch back to Current navigation route to follow navigation again. Weather-only drafts last during this page session; reload returns to navigation weather.

Departure times use your device’s time zone; checkpoint times show their local time zones. Changing a weather-only date clears the previous preview until you press Preview again. Use Departure planner to compare departure windows for the navigation route or a separate trip.

Local weather opens the forecast near your GPS location, with no route required. Browser location permission is required. If location is unavailable, choose Home or Search; the app does not silently substitute another place. My location retries GPS and returns to the nearby forecast. The area name comes from the weather provider; a ZIP code is not inferred.

The top Home weather card shows your saved place and its current-hour forecast when available. To save one, choose Search, enter a U.S. ZIP code, city, address, or place, press Find place, and choose the correct match. Save as home remembers it on this device. Or press Use current location as home beside Remove home and allow location access to save your current coordinates directly. A denied, unavailable, or imprecise location leaves the existing home unchanged. Choose Home to view that forecast or Remove home to delete the preference. Searching elsewhere does not replace home. A city or ZIP code can be saved instead of a street address.

The large weather card shows the current-hour forecast, temperature, rain chance, wind and humidity when available. It is a forecast, not a live station observation. Swipe or scroll just the Hourly card row sideways to see more hours, and select a day, or choose Daily outlook for daytime and nighttime forecasts. Missing data stays unavailable; an hourly or daily service failure does not hide the other available forecast.

Read aloud reads local conditions plus the selected hourly day or daily outlook. Stop ends playback. Changing location, forecast view/day, or leaving Local weather stops an old reading. Turn announcements take priority. Browser speech availability and device volume still apply.

On Driving map, enable Weather emojis in Map controls. Route symbols stay at their checkpoint locations, so zoom out to see points farther ahead. The separate Now emoji beside your location shows the current-hour forecast sampled within 1 km, even without a route; it is not the arrival-time forecast for the trip. Stale GPS or unavailable current weather hides that emoji. Check Map controls for weather status. Unknown route checkpoints display ❔ rather than disappearing.

A saved navigation departure in the past is evaluated as leaving now and labeled in Trip weather. A weather-only preview requires Leave now or a future departure; current forecasts cannot recreate past weather.

Trip weather uses twice the previous symbol density at each zoom level, limited by available checkpoints and space. Symbols use full-color weather artwork and explicit contrast in both themes. Zooming reveals already-loaded checkpoints and does not itself request more forecasts. Wider views show fewer symbols, prioritizing higher-concern conditions while keeping each symbol at its actual route checkpoint. All forecast checkpoints remain in the report. NWS coverage and forecast availability vary; missing dates are not replaced with forecasts from another day. Forecast descriptions are not official warnings or radar.

Saved information and permissions

On entry, foreground location tracking is requested automatically. Your browser must grant permission. Updates pause while the page is hidden; Map controls lets you stop them for this visit. Nearby weather uses coordinates to request a forecast from the National Weather Service. Location and map requests can also be sent to the selected mapping/routing providers. You can deny or revoke permission in browser settings. The app saves preferences, a shared five-place recent list, the last confirmed trip’s start and destination, camera choices, and trip state in this browser’s local storage. Clear all recent places also clears the remembered trip pair. Home weather stores the location you explicitly save; it can be removed with Remove home. Anyone using the same browser profile may be able to see it. Browser site settings let you clear all saved site data and revoke location permission.

Address searches, route requests, weather coordinates, map requests, and camera playback contact their respective providers. No new paid account or secret API key is required for this redesign. Camera and map attribution remains visible. Device data charges and hosting/provider limits still apply.
